spooky, we bought a new (to us) car yesterday and, in the last 12 hours I asthmatic and wheezing like mad - so some of the above came naturally.

Alright, this is really making me wonder -- three non-American mutterings I've looked at in a few minutes now and all three have "knife" for Stanley. Very intersting! If a single American has that answer, I'd be very surprised.

I've gotten used to seeing the Stanley Knife thing, but why Baxter?
And why are Hockey Sticks jolly?
Clearly Stanley knives are a uk construct! Stanley Baxter is (was going to say 'was' but I've just visited his wikipedia page) a Scottish comedian.
Jolly hockey sticks - is a spoof of what upper class UK boarding school girls of the 1950's might have said, there's some interesting explanations - and links(!) here
